The HandmadeEffect offers art workshops that explore the stories, processes, and traditions of making objects with human hands.
We honor the art inherent in everyday life and hold that art is for everyone, everyday—
to use, to make, to see, to hold.

“There was a time not so long ago when everything was recognizable not just as a cup or a coat, but as a cup made by so-and-so out of clay from this bank on the local river or woven by the guy in that house out of wool from sheep visible on the hills. Then objects were not purely material, mere commodities, but signs of processes, human and natural, pieces of a story, and the story as well as the stuff sustained life.”

Our Values

We foster a rich and diverse community experience where thoughtfulness, kindness, integrity, and the joyful exchange of knowledge is highly valued.

We work with the use of hands and hand tools, and see a richness embedded in objects created by hand - the marks, imagery, and material connections, all giving certain signs of human care and involvement.

We overlap and draw connections within a wide range of disciplines including textiles, woodworking, drawing, painting and printmaking.

We promote the use of environmentally sound practices and strive to use local and ecologically sustainable materials.
